Liverpool set for hectic winter period due to Club World Cup

Liverpool may have to play 10 games in the space of 29 days over the Christmas period after FIFA released the Club World Cup fixture dates.

The European champions will travel to Qatar for the semi-finals and final or third-place play-off on 18 and 21 December respectively, the same week in which the Carabao Cup quarter-finals are set to take place.

If they reach the final, it’ll be played on the same day as Liverpool were initially supposed to visit West Ham United in the Premier League, but even with that postponement, there are still six league matches to be played between 4 December and 1 January.

Qatar was awarded the tournament to prepare for the 2022 World Cup, with the draw for the second round and semi-finals to be made in Zurich on 16 September.

There will be eight matches played in total, with Concacaf Champions League winners CF Monterrey and OFC Champions League winners Hienghene Sport joining the Reds.

The Caf, AFC and Conmebol representatives are yet to be confirmed and there will also be a team from the host nation to make up the seven-club field.

It certainly presents a great chance to earn more silverware, but hopefully, it won’t disrupt other competitions too much.
