Alex McCarthy has emerged as the favourite to replace Simon Mignolet at Liverpool this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Mignolet has left the Reds after six years at the club, as he searches for more regular first team football.
The 31-year-old has returned to his homeland and signed for Club Brugge, having been second choice to Alisson throughout last season.
Liverpool now have until Thursday to bring in a replacement for Mignolet, with free agent Andy Lonergan not being kept on.
Several names have already been mooted to come in and be Alisson’s deputy between the sticks, including former Reds hero Pepe Reina.
It is McCarthy who is the current ‘frontrunner’ to move to Anfield, though, according to recent developments.
The Southampton ‘keeper was left out of his side’s squad for their pre-season friendly win over FC Koln on Saturday, further adding to the speculation.
A signing may be announced as soon as Monday, although that is not guaranteed.
