Milner expected to be fit for Norwich clash – but should he start?

Jurgen Klopp is confident that James Milner will be available for selection against Norwich City.

The Reds begin their 2019/20 Premier League campaign with the visit of the newly-promoted Canaries on Friday night.

Klopp has told LiverpoolFC.com that Milner can train “by at least Tuesday”, giving the veteran time to recover before the game.

While Milner’s return is an undoubted positive for Liverpool, his chances of starting should be slim.

The 33-year-old remains an evergreen presence, but Klopp now has stronger options at his disposal.

Fabinho has made the No.6 role his own since arriving from Monaco and the likes of Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum are also favourites of Klopp’s.

Naby Keita brought a forward-thinking style to proceedings during Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Man City, as can Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana.

Only a midfield shortage should make Milner a regular starter this season, so a substitutes’ appearance is the best he can hope for against Norwich.

That’s not to decry how invaluable he remains as a squad player, however, both on and off the pitch.
