Klopp urges LFC to “stay greedy” – Reds must build on Champions League win

Liverpool’s players must not rest on their laurels after winning the Champions League, creating an Anfield dynasty in the process.

In an interview with UEFA’s official website, Klopp has urged his players to remain hungry and not relax after June’s European triumph:

Stay greedy. That’s very important – I have no doubt about that, but it’s clear that we have to do that.

After the final we had about four weeks where everybody was [patting us on the back] and it was brilliant wherever we went.

It’s just nice, but in a different world things like this can soften you and it can take the power out of you a bit.

We are not like this, but it’s a fact that it could happen, at least. We only have to do the same again, and with a couple of things we maybe didn’t do too well, we have to do better. That’s how it is.

Klopp’s words are hugely encouraging, not that the German’s opinion has ever been in question.

One of the most disappointing aspects of several past Liverpool sides has been their inability to kick on after promising periods.

The Reds had great spells under Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers, but as they lay on the cusp of building something special, they fell apart.

For that to happen to this current Reds team would be heartbreaking for anyone associated with the club, but in Klopp they have a special manager who won’t let it happen.

Of course, there is every chance their club-record haul of 97 points last season won’t be repeated, and they may not manage to win back-to-back Champions League crowns, but they should be in a healthy position whatever happens.

The key is continuing to thrive across all competitions, proving that the win in Madrid hasn’t gone to the players’ heads.
