The quality of Liverpool’s front three is so great that signing a tailor-made backup is extremely difficult.

Speaking on ‘The Big Debate’, Gary Neville believes this has become an issue for the Reds, with no top player likely to be happy with a supporting role from the substitutes’ bench:

Who’s going to come in as a striker at Liverpool?

If you’re Liverpool wanting to spend £75million on striker now or a forward, those front three that are there now aren’t going to be happy sitting on the bench.

So you’re going to have to **** them off right away and the guy coming in for £75million isn’t gonna sit on the bench. You have got a bit of a problem.

It is certainly something of a dilemma for Jurgen Klopp, who has opted against adding to his attack this summer.

While supporters were desperate for Liverpool to spend big, the reality is that star names are not happy playing second fiddle to others.

Nicolas Pepe is a prime example, with the Arsenal man linked with the Reds throughout the summer.

A player of huge potential, he was never going to oust any of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, so he couldn’t justify a move to Anfield.

It leaves Liverpool in a precarious situation if one of their famous front-three gets injured, but the situation is more complex than some like to believe.

Someone like Xherdan Shaqiri is the ideal man to have, because he possesses undoubted quality but is also relatively content with not playing every week.

Finding signings who tick both of those boxes is tricky, though.
