Gerrard tipped to replace Klopp – but LFC’s head must rule their heart

Steven Gerrard is the logical successor to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but Liverpool should only appoint him if he is good enough.

In quotes provided by the The Herald, former Reds goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek has tipped Gerrard to be Klopp’s replacement, when the German eventually decides to call it a day:

There are many reasons for his success. Steven has a nose for a good player, he can cope with difficult conditions and he has surrounded himself with the right people, like Gary McAllister, who is in some ways his football mentor, because he helped him a lot at Liverpool.

Steven also has the opportunity to use the wisdom of Jurgen Klopp.

When I was in Liverpool recently, it was no secret that Steven is the main and indeed, only candidate for replacing Klopp when he decides his time at Anfield is over.

Everyone knows that sooner or later the great captain will return.

In an ideal world, Gerrard will replace Klopp many years down the line, at which point Liverpool have been dominant in the English and European game.

The Reds legend would then seamlessly slip into the role, much in the way Bob Paisley did when he took over from Bill Shankly in 1974.

Liverpool must be careful that their heart doesn’t rule their head, however, and only appoint Gerrard if he has merited getting such a huge job.

The early signs are promising, with the 39-year-old impressing at Rangers, but he must continue to go from strength to strength if he is to manage his boyhood club.

If there are stronger alternatives by the time the Liverpool job becomes vacant, the club must be ruthless and not bring in Gerrard for the sake of it.
