It’s been exactly nine years since Javier Mascherano left Liverpool to join Barcelona in the summer of 2010.
The defensive midfielder was part of the ‘best midfield in the world’ alongside Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard, becoming a hugely popular figure at Anfield.
Signed from West Ham in January 2007, initially on loan, the Reds eventually finalised a permanent deal for him.
A master of the tackle and the dark arts, he brought the grit needed as Liverpool challenged for the Champions League and Premier League during his time on Merseyside.
Despite being a key part of Rafa Benitez’s tenure, the Argentine never bagged a major honour at Liverpool.
He captained his country at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, retiring after the 2018 World Cup as the most capped player for his nation.
Mascherano did win Olympic gold medals, but never got his hands on the coveted Copa America or World Cup.
To mark the nine-year anniversary of his departure to sunny Spain, here’s a quiz looking back on his career.
Frankly, anything below 80 percent simply isn’t good enough!
Good luck…
