Liverpool and Newcastle have a long history stretching back to 1893.
Fast forwarding a century to the early years of the Premier League, the two sides had some famous tussles.
Newcastle won four of the first six meetings after the formation of England’s top-tier in 1992, but what followed was an unbeaten streak of over four years for the Reds.
In recent times, Newcastle have been handcuffed to unpopular owner Mike Ashley, getting relegated twice under his ownership.
Steve Bruce is now in charge and his side have picked up just four points from their opening four league games this season, admittedly clinching an impressive shock win away at Tottenham.
The Reds are looking for their fifth consecutive win to start the season – another three points against the Magpies on Saturday will see them stay at the top of the Premier League.
Despite the current gulf in class between the two sides, and the relative ease in which Liverpool have dispatched of Newcastle in recent years, the fixture still elicits a certain emotion in supporters who remember the battles of the 1990’s.
So what is Liverpool’s best Premier League win over Newcastle at Anfield?
Here’s how we rank them.
Liverpool 3-0 Newcastle - May 2009
When the two sides met at Anfield a decade ago, they were heading in different directions.
Rafa Benítez’ men were still chasing Manchester United in the title race, while Newcastle were on manager number three for the season – Alan Shearer, brought in to (unsuccessfully) keep his boyhood team in the Premier League.
Yossi Benayoun and Dirk Kuyt put Liverpool 2-0 up within 30 minutes and Lucas Leiva added a rare goal late on – his first-ever league strike for Liverpool.
Liverpool 4-0 Newcastle - December 2018
Boxing Day last year saw Liverpool go six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, on the way to a record points haul.
Dejan Lovren scored a thumping half-volley 11 minutes in and his good friend Mohamed Salah scored a penalty after half-time, before Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri completed the scoring with late goals.
Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle - December 1998
Liverpool broke Newcastle hearts back in 1998, but not for the first time.
Despite Didi Hamann being sent-off just 30 minutes in, the Magpies had a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes left in the game.
Karl-Heinz Riedle made to 2-2 soon after and a young Michael Owen made it 3-2, however, before the former added a fourth for good measure.
It was another long trip home for Newcastle’s players and supporters.
