Liverpool vs Newcastle: Combined XI

With the international break over, club football will resume this weekend.

Liverpool take on Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday, with the Champions League holders winning their previous game against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce’s men drew against Watford at St. James’ Park, meaning the sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Last season, the Reds won both fixtures against Newcastle. The match at Anfield saw Liverpool batter them 4-0 thanks to goals from Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho, with the latter netting his first for the Reds.

The encounter at St. James’ Park turned out to be a thrilling one. A header from Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring for Liverpool, before Christian Atsu leveled things up for the hosts.

Jurgen Klopp’s men restored the lead thanks to Mohamed Salah, but Salomon Rondon got the equaliser from the Magpies early in the second half.

Substitute Divock Origi’s header from Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick won the match for Liverpool.

Ever since losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace in April 2017, the Reds have gone unbeaten in 42 Premier League matches at Anfield. They are heavy favorites to win on Saturday and extend that run.

A victory for Newcastle will be their first over Liverpool in their own backyard since 1995, back when Magpies manager Bruce used to play for Manchester United.

Ahead of the weekend game, here’s a look at our customary combined XI, this time between the Reds and Newcastle – injured players are included…
