After a stunning early blow, the Reds fell behind against the Magpies. Liverpool recovered to cruise past Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield.
Afternoon kickoffs are always a bit odd for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Slower starts and occasionally unexpected things happen. That was the case when Liverpool got a little lax in applying pressure to Newcastle on a counter and received an early wakeup call.
After just seven minutes Jetro Willems unleashed an unexpected cracking finish, cutting the ball back onto his weaker foot and letting loose a laserbeam past Adrian into the top corner. It certainly shocked Liverpool into life.
Liverpool took time to regain their form from before the international break. Never rattled, they simply returned to work looking for solutions to slice through their visitors.
Despite taking some time to find their rhythm, the Reds eventually shifted gears and started purring. Picking up the pace soon found Newcastle giving up gaps all over the shop. Once Sadio Mané leveled with an equally beautiful goal, there was little doubt about the result.
Another Mané goal and an addition from Mo Salah allowed, the Reds to ease off and coast into victory. Now, Jurgen Klopp has guided the club to a 14th consecutive league victory, only the fourth team to do so, but the first to do it scoring more than once in each win. It continued Liverpool’s perfect start and bodes well for their midweek trip to Italy.
Here are four findings from the match.
