Steven Gerrard is the logical long-term replacement for Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, but he must not get the job simply on his status at Anfield.
Klopp won the Best FIFA Men’s Coach award on Monday night, following a superb year in charge of the Reds, winning the Champions League for the first time in his career.
In an interview with FourFourTwo, the German admitted he hopes Gerrard replaces him when he eventually leaves Liverpool:
If Liverpool were to sack me tomorrow, then maybe Kenny would be the first choice to replace me, but they would probably bring Stevie down from Glasgow.
If you ask who should follow me, I’d say Stevie. I help him whenever I can.

While the idea of Gerrard one day managing Liverpool is an exciting one, given how idolised he is, supporters will hope he isn’t in the Anfield hot-seat any time soon.
Klopp has done a remarkable job on Merseyside, completely transforming the entire mentality at the club and turning the Reds into European champions.
He is one of the two best managers in world football currently, along with Pep Guardiola, and the thought of Liverpool losing him is a grim thought.
Hopefully, he eventually extends his current deal, which runs until 2022, and remains at the club well into the 2020s.
By the time he moves on, Gerrard could be at a point where he has matured enough as a manager to be worthy of the Liverpool job,
It is a natural progression, but the current Rangers boss shouldn’t take charge if he isn’t up to the task.
