View from the Terraces – Sheffield United 0-1 Liverpool

The fourth away day in the space of 12 days.

A wet and windy coach journey through Snake Pass, entwined with an early kick off, Saturday will not be remembered as being one of the more glamorous away trips for the travelling Kop.

In terms of performance, Liverpool have been a lot better in the recent past, but yet again, here we are speaking about another Reds win.

Before the game, most of the lads on the bus complained of tiredness from two trips down south the week before, and that transcended onto the pitch at Bramall Lane.

A soaking pitch meant that Liverpool could never really get going. In the away end, apart from a few Sadio Mane chances, there was no real concrete feeling that a goal was coming in the first half.

Sheffield United were a very awkward, strong and physically fit side and Liverpool just didn’t look like they would score when chances presented themselves.

Into the second half, as the rain came pouring down and the hoods on jackets came up, there was still no real sight of a Liverpool goal.

Divock Origi’s introduction, which at first was met with confusion among myself and friends, proved pivotal.

The reason for that confusion was purely for the fact that Origi is seen by many as a player to hold a lead, instead of chasing one.

The minutes came and went, and then finally a scuffled volley was met by the quiet Gini Wijnaldum, who blasted a shot towards Dean Henderson.

At first it seemed like a standard save, then suddenly the ball was behind the goalkeeper and seemed to take an eternity to cross the line.

When it did, there was pandemonium.

The relief felt around Liverpool’s away end was unprecedented and the Dutchman, with the help of United’s ‘keeper, had got us out of jail.

After that, the Reds’ section was coveted with smoke bombs, excitement and the reminder to the home supporters that we were the Champions of Europe.

This was by no stretch of the imagination Liverpool’s best display of the season, and could definitely make a claim for being our worse.

But one thing that all Liverpool fans can agree on is the shared frustration we have all experienced over the last couple of decades at watching Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea sides grinding out results exactly like this.

It genuinely is a sign of champions.

The Blades are a side that have definitely got the characteristics to stay up this season, and could even be this campaign’s Wolves, in terms of being a dark horse who find themselves in the top half come the end of the season.

The general consensus leaving the ground was a case of “at least that fixture is out of the way”.

As the season goes on, do not be surprised if some of the bigger teams in the Premier League drop points at Bramall Lane, and this result could look all the more impressive come the end of the season.

Focus now turns to Wednesday’s home meeting against RB Salzburg, as the Reds look to get their first points in the Champions League, then a crucial clash with Leicester City at Anfield on Saturday.

After a 5-0 win against Newcastle United, the Reds will seriously need to improve their performance to continue their 100 percent record.

Is the pressure of the winning streak getting to the Reds? Did the heavily congested couple of weeks take its toll?

Time will tell, but the fact of the matter is that Liverpool are still top of the league, and the match-winning goal, no matter how rival fans may coat it, is a sign of champions.
