Jurgen Klopp may be settled at Liverpool after four superb years at the club, but he wasn’t always nailed-on to join the Reds.

The German was one of the world’s most sought-after bosses when he left Borussia Dortmund in 2015, having worked wonders with the Bundesliga giants for seven years.

The likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid were linked with acquiring Klopp’s signature, but he opted for Liverpool instead, arriving in October 2015.

Writing in the Mirror, Reds legend Robbie Fowler has claimed that United’s focus on the commercial aspect of the games immediately worked against them bringing in Klopp:

I did an interview with him a couple of years ago and he told me he turned down a couple of super-rich clubs after Dortmund – one of them was definitely Manchester United, the other probably Real Madrid – because he hated how they were focused solely on commercial influences.

He said he liked Liverpool because they had a balance between the money needed to reach the top and the history and identity of the club and their fans.

Fowler’s comments will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans.

United have struggled ever since Alex Ferguson departed in 2013, but had they got Klopp ahead of the Reds, their fortunes would have been turned around very quickly.

Fortunately, Liverpool got their man instead, reaching the pinnacle of European football under him, while their rivals continue to struggle.

The pair go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon – let’s hope Klopp gives United a timely reminder why they missed a trick in not getting him.
