Firmino responds to Keane’s criticism of pre-match ritual

Roy Keane isn’t shy of an opinion and he was his usual controversial self before Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The United legend was left fuming by the pre-match niceties on show, as players from either side embraced each other in the tunnel.

It was a far cry from the images of Keane and Patrick Vieira almost having a fight before a meeting between United and Arsenal back in 2005.

Roberto Firmino was one of those players in question, sharing a hug with fellow fellow Brazilian Fred.

Speaking to ESPN Brasil, the Liverpool superstar has reacted to Keane’s comments, saying it is only normal and that his mindset will instantly change out on the pitch:

I don’t want to create controversy with anyone.

I find it quite normal before the game to greet each other, ask how they are doing.

That’s all. Nothing more than that. But on the pitch, they aren’t friends, each one defends his club to the best of his ability.

Then the rivalry increases on the pitch.

At the end of the day, players approach matches in different ways, which is something Keane has to accept.

Not everyone enters the field of play like a man possessed, but Firmino will be just as hungry to win the game and Keane would have been during his career.

It is a case of embracing different cultures and accepting that the game has changed slightly.
