“Why not?” – Carragher believes Gerrard can replace Klopp in the future

Jurgen Klopp may be very much in the middle of his Liverpool contract, but that doesn’t stop talk surrounding his future successor.

Pepijn Lijnders has been discussed as a candidate this week, following a hugely impressive press conference before the Carabao Cup epic against Arsenal.

It is Steven Gerrard would is still picked out as the natural replacement in the eyes of many, though, given his status at Anfield and the eye-catching job he is doing at Rangers.

Former colleague Jamie Carragher has spoken to the Liverpool Echo about Gerrard managing Liverpool one day, saying there is no reason why couldn’t take on the role:

Why not? There will be a clamour for probably a lot of people I think whenever Jurgen Klopp decides his time is up at Liverpool but hopefully that’s a long way away.

There’s no doubt Steven Gerrard will come into that because of the job he’s doing at Rangers but also because he’s a Liverpool legend.

He’s doing a fantastic job at Rangers so that will certainly help him.

When the day finally comes that Klopp moves on from Liverpool – hopefully many years down the line – Gerrard must only replace him if he is equipped to.

Appointing him simply because of who he is would be a grave error, potentially undoing all of Klopp’s great work.

There is no reason why Gerrard can’t mature into a manager good enough to be Reds boss, but he will have to keep proving himself in the coming years.
