The Reds continue to find a way to win. Liverpool left it late but pulled off a pivotal comeback to beat Aston Villa 1-2 at Villa Park.
It became clear early that Liverpool were not quite firing with their typical spark. Conceding the first goal again also contributed to their difficulties. However, this side simply does not accept defeat.
While Villa are lacking quality and were even missing their talisman Jack Grealish, they can be a difficult side, particularly at home. Combined with possibly the worst 45 minutes the Reds have played this campaign as the table toppers made plenty of work for themselves, then the game was always going to be a tough one.
After entering the break 1-0 down after Mo Salah’s fellow countryman Trézéguet steered a John McGinn free-kick past Alisson, a second half regrouping did not bear immediate fruit, not that there were no chances. None of the front three seemed able to find a finish, despite Sadio Mané being clearly up for the match.
Roberto Firmino’s nearly scored an immediate equalizer only to have it chalked off in the latest VAR debacle. Both Firmino and Salah found themselves in great spaces only to struggle with shooting.
Eventually, it was Andrew Robertson who latched onto a Mané cross and fired a bullet header past Villan keeper Tom Heaton. The goal seemed to fully recharge the Reds as they relentlessly pushed for a late winner. Mané proved the main man once again, steering a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner across the face of the goal and in stoppage time to cap off a dramatic late victory.
Here are four findings from the match.
