League leaders Liverpool welcome Premier League champions Manchester City to Anfield in probably the biggest game of world football on Sunday afternoon.
While the Reds go into this game six points clear of the Cityzens at the top of the table, they are yet to play their best football. Sunday won’t be a bad day to bring it out, as that would be required if they are to beat Pep Guardiola’s men.
The corresponding fixture last season was the first time both teams showed massive respect to each other and it ended up being a conservative goalless draw.
Expect a more open game this time around, knowing that City might have to win tomorrow to inject more pace into their title challenge. For Liverpool, it should be a case for not losing this game and keeping the lead to at least six points by the end of the day.
In terms of team news, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri remain out, while Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk are fit to play.
Here’s how we think the manager might line his team up:
GK - Alisson Becker
He is Liverpool’s number one keeper and there is no doubt regarding his position in goal on Sunday. He will be aiming to keep a clean sheet though, something which is very tough to keep against Manchester City.
RB - Trent Alexander-Arnold
The youngster is the first-choice right-back at the club, and is a certain starter for the game on Sunday. His distribution from wide areas and set-pieces could be key.
CB - Dejan Lovren
With Joel Matip out, Klopp would prefer Lovren over Joe Gomez in central defence. The Croatian has done well this season and deserves another chance.
CB - Virgil van Dijk
The Dutchman missed training on Thursday, but that doesn’t have any bearing on his availability for this game. He will start, and would look to stamp his authority on Sergio Aguero.
LB - Andy Robertson
The Scotsman played only 15 minutes on Tuesday as Klopp offered him some rest. He should be fresh to start on Sunday and provide attacking threat down the left-hand side.
CDM - Fabinho
Fabinho was rested for the Aston Villa game last week with suspicion of getting a fifth yellow card. He is Liverpool’s first-choice defensive midfielder and will start this all-important game on Sunday.
RCM - Jordan Henderson
The skipper missed the game on Tuesday due to illness. He is back in training and is a certainty to lead the team out this weekend.
LCM - Georginio Wijnaldum
The Dutchman’s overall game in midfield has been off the boil in the past couple of weeks. He is a big game player though, and would relish the possibility of playing against the best on Sunday.
RW - Mohamed Salah
Despite his ongoing ankle issues, Salah is fit enough to start on Sunday. His form has been good despite not scoring, which shouldn’t bother anyone around Liverpool one bit.
ST - Roberto Firmino
The Brazil international played only five minutes of football on Tuesday as Klopp managed his playing time. He should be back leading the line from the start against City.
LW - Sadio Mane
Mane is one of the in-form players around Europe. He will be looking forward to this game, mainly after the exchange of comments between him and Pep Guardiola during the week.
