Klopp’s wife persuaded him to reject Man United, claims Thompson

Jurgen Klopp’s wife told him not to become Manchester United manager, according to former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson.

The German is doing an extraordinary job in charge of the Reds, with Sunday’s 3-1 win over Manchester City taking them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

In four years, he has turned Liverpool into arguably the best club side in the world, playing stunning football along the way.

Klopp was linked with various English clubs before moving to Anfield in 2015, with Manchester United and Arsenal two of those mentioned.

Speaking to TV2, Thompson has revealed that the Liverpool boss didn’t head to Old Trafford because his wife turned him against the idea:

I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other. He looked at me and asked why.

Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn’t right. When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It is as if he’s created for Liverpool.

The thought of Klopp being United manager is a horrendous one for any Liverpool supporter.

History could have panned out very differently had that been the case, with the 52-year-old surely the Reds’ most influential figure of the 21st century, along with Steven Gerrard.

While Liverpool have hit huge heights during his tenure, United have continued to struggle greatly in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

We all have Klopp’s wife to thank for persuading her husband to ignore their advances.
