Van Dijk urges Liverpool not to get “carried away” with eight-point lead

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool must avoid getting “carried away”, despite their lead at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds hold an eight-point advantage over Leicester City and Chelsea, as well as a nine-point lead over Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s side’s 3-1 win over the champions on Sunday was a major statement of intent, with the victory at Anfield fully deserved.

One of the biggest things that could hold Liverpool’s title charge back is an overconfidence or feeling that the job is done.

Speaking to the Guardian, Van Dijk has stressed the importance of remaining grounded between now and May:

We are in a very good situation. That is something we can’t deny. We all feel and know the season is too long to properly celebrate that we are nine points ahead or something and we won’t.

The mentality we have is we just have to carry on and keep doing better than we did against City. That is the mentality we should take into every game ahead of us.

Everyone is happy about the win but I don’t think, because of what the mentality is like, we will get carried away.

Nine points clear; we are very happy with the situation but there are so many difficult teams to beat in the league, so many difficult grounds to go to that we all have in our minds that we shouldn’t get carried away.

It must be difficult not to start dreaming of Premier League glory, but Klopp is the perfect man to be in this situation.

He will ensure his players don’t go overboard about their current advantage, with Van Dijk also a calm figure to have around.

There is still over a third of the season remaining, summing up why it is far too early to be thinking about Liverpool winning a maiden Premier League title.
