Klopp calls for changes to be made with VAR

Jurgen Klopp has called for changes to be made with VAR.

The technology has proved hugely divisive in the Premier League this season, with a lack of consistency on show.

Big decisions are being made every week, but rather than helping avoid debate, it is only creating more.

There are calls from some to get rid of it completely in the Premier League, while others are demanding changes to it.

Klopp is in the latter camp, and speaking at a UEFA coaches’ conference, he outlined what he believes needs to be done:

VAR can be improved, it can. It will never be 100 per cent accurate, everybody knows that. But there are a couple of things that are not right.

With VAR, handball, offside, it is clear we have to keep on improving.

There were good ideas from UEFA (about) how we can sort things from the referees, so everybody is in on it.

There is still space for mistakes. These things are done by human beings and none of us is perfect. Nobody is asking for perfection, you just want to have the right decisions.

It is hard to claim that VAR has been anything close to a success in England to date, with far too many decisions causing negativity.

It is still early days, however, and it may be that the technology can work, if used correctly by the right people.

Whatever happens, opinion is likely to continue to be split, but VAR simply has to improve to justify its implementation.
