Jordan Henderson has admitted he was “ready to kill” Luis Suarez during the pair’s early days at Liverpool.
Henderson arrived at Anfield from Sunderland in the summer of 2011, with big things expected of him.
He got off to a tough start, however, struggling to justify his price tag and almost being sold by Brendan Rodgers.
Suarez had joined Liverpool in the January before Henderson became a Red, but it appears as though the pair clashed at first.
Speaking on The Greatest Game with Jamie Carragher podcast, the Liverpool captain admits his teammate’s initial antics towards him left him angry:
I was trying to do the best I can do. Being a footballer, there is criticism and people doubting you all the time.
At that time, I was a young player and there were one or two things Luis did in training that I didn’t like.
It made me feel I wasn’t good enough to be in the same team in training. The arms were up like ‘what the f***, what is he doing’, like I shouldn’t be there.
That really hurt me. He did it three times and then I exploded and I was ready to kill him.
From that point, I had a good relationship with Luis. The next game I set him up for his goal.
He was brilliant with me after that and I was really close to him after that and he was another big player I learned from.

It is easy to forget how difficult life was for Henderson at the start of his Reds career, with so many criticising his performances.
The 29-year-old still has detractors now, and always will do, but he has earned more admirers down the years, forging an impressive Anfield career in the process.
Henderson’s comments sum up what a difficult character Suarez could be, but ultimately, he was a perfectionist who expected everyone to be at his level.
The entire conversation with Jamie Carragher is well worth a listen.
