Alonso outlines what makes Fabinho so special

Fabinho has a strong case for being Liverpool’s Player of the Year so far in 2019/20, following a string of colossal performances.

The 26-year-old has been a fantastic signing from Monaco, adjusting to life in the Premier League to become one of the most influential players in the division.

Someone who knows a thing or two about being a world-class midfielder is Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard spent five memorable years at Liverpool, and while a very different player to Fabinho, he enjoyed a huge influence of his own.

Speaking to The Athletic, Alonso revealed what makes the Brazilian such a formidable presence:

He is connected to the game, always. His anticipation is his greatest asset.

Sometimes you only have to take one or two steps to change the movements of your teammates and that can determine the whole outcome of the game without anyone really realising because spectators tend to follow the ball rather than the player.

He’s not reacting one second later, he’s anticipating what is going to happen one second before.

This time last year, there were actually some Liverpool fans who weren’t convinced about Fabinho.

They showed a complete lack of patience, however, and he is now one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team-sheet.

The authority and quality he possesses in the No.6 role is unrivalled at Anfield and keeping him fit is paramount.

Klopp has signed an absolute gem in Fabinho, with few midfielders in the world superior on current form.
