Leicester are a threat to Liverpool’s title hopes, claims Thompson

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes Leicester City could challenge the Reds for the Premier League title this season.

The Foxes are excelling under Brendan Rodgers, sitting second in the table, eight points adrift of Liverpool.

Not many even tipped Leicester to finish in the top four in 2019/20, but there is a growing swell of opinion that they are legitimate title contenders.

Thompson sees them as an undoubted threat, telling Sporting Life that they could even be superior to their title-winning side back in 2015/16:

I can remember when Leicester were on a similar run when they were going for the Premier League, and this is a better team than their title-winning team.

If you look around the team, there is a fantastic balance around it which works.

Their problem, like Liverpool, is if they do get some injuries they would struggle. Everybody is pulling in the same direction and working together.

When they won the title people thought they would drop and fail, but there is something about this football club which keeps on producing.

Leicester look a very impressive team at the moment and there is no reason why they can’t keep up their good form.

Rodgers’ side don’t have European football to contend with, which could act as a real advantage as the campaign progresses.

Leicester don’t quite have the squad depth of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, however, so they need to be fortunate with injuries.

It will be fascinating to see if the Foxes continue to progress – Reds supporters wouldn’t be upset to see some dropped points occur sooner rather than later.
