Phil Thompson knows a thing or two about winning a league title with Liverpool, having earned seven First Division winners’ medals during his time at Anfield.
The current Reds team sit eights points clear at the top of the Premier League, with many tipping this to finally be their year.
Jurgen Klopp has assembled a team full of world-class talent and they head into Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace having dropped just two points all season.
Thompson is one of the many Liverpool fans not getting too carried away, however, and he believes there are three things that could curtail the Reds’ progress.
Speaking to Sporting Life, the former centre-back highlighted VAR, red cards and injuries as key aspects of Liverpool’s title charge:
It is that little bit of luck, at times, the little bit of VAR going in your favour, that could equally go against you.
Red cards will be massive too – you only need a red card and then your backs are against the wall, especially against the big boys.
But the biggest one of all is injures. It has decimated City’s defence, and if they had everybody fit, they could have been a lot closer to Liverpool.

Liverpool may be well-placed in the Premier League, but there is still such a long way to go.
Keeping big players fit is the most important thing for Klopp, with Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah both doubtful for the weekend trip to Selhurst Park.
Klopp and his players won’t be getting carried away at all yet, taking each game as it comes.
Saturday’s match will be another tough hurdle to overcome – three points would again feel massive.
