Virgil van Dijjk missed out on Ballon d’Or glory by just seven points, according to the Daily Mail.
The 28-year-old was beaten to the prestigious award by Lionel Messi on Monday night, meaning the legendary Barcelona man has won it a record six times.
Many felt that Van Dijk was the more worthy winner this year, but Messi ending up being voted the cream of the crop.
It was a very close call, however, with only seven points separating Europe’s two premier footballers in 2019.
Messi received 686 votes, while Van Dijk finished on 679.

Although it is hard to ever begrudge Messi any kind of individual accolade, he didn’t deserve it this time around.
Van Dijk put together an immaculate 2019, as he continues to show why he is the world’s leading centre-back.
No player is more important to Liverpool and he would walk into any team on the planet.
It is testament to Van Dijk that he got so close to Messi, who is surely the greatest player in history.
