“I know how highly we all think of him” – Van Dijk hails Henderson’s leadership

Virgil van Dijk has hailed the leadership of Jordan Henderson, following another impressive night for Liverpool.

The skipper was excellent in the Reds’ 2-0 win away to Salzburg on Tuesday, leading by example and assisting Mohamed Salah’s brilliantly-taken strike.

Henderson has spent his career being a divisive figure, but he has become an increasingly influential captain since replacing Steven Gerrard in the role.

While many will never fully warm to the 29-year-old, it is clear what Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool players think of him.

Speaking to The Athletic after Tuesday’s victory, Van Dijk lauded the impact of Henderson as captain:

Jordan is such an important player for this team.

The contribution he makes goes unnoticed sometimes. I don’t know if he’s under-appreciated outside the club, but inside the club I know how highly we all think of him. He’s our captain and he always leads by example.

He created the second goal with a great pass and always works so hard for the team.

We all appreciate what he does for Liverpool, both on and off the pitch. He’s a leader.

At 29, he has matured into one of Europe’s best captains, perfecting the role in many ways.

Henderson has certainly gained more admirers in recent times, especially since lifting the Champions League trophy back in June.

If he ends this season as a Premier League-winning captain, legendary status will surely be secured at Liverpool.
