Liverpool don’t want to be “the team who won one trophy”, says Milner

James Milner has urged Liverpool not to become known as “the team who won one trophy.”

The Reds beat Monterrey 2-1 on Wednesday night, reaching the Club World Cup final in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face Flamengo in Saturday’s showcase event in Doha, looking to win the competition for the first time.

If they manage that, it will be three trophies in 2019 for the Reds, adding to Champions League and UEFA Super Cup glory.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Saturday’s game, Milner stressed the importance of winning more trophies in the coming years:

It was important to get that first trophy on the board. We were unfortunate not to win in a few finals but you see how the team has moved on.

Like I said before, we don’t want to be remembered as the team who won one trophy once.

You want to be a part of a group where you forget which year you won one trophy.

For a while, Klopp was criticised for not winning any silverware at Liverpool, struggling to get over the finish lines in three finals.

The Champions League win was huge, however, and the hope is that it creates a winning mentality at Anfield.

The early signs suggest that is the case – victory on Saturday would be another step in the right direction.
