Carlos Zambrano has revealed he had the opportunity to join Liverpool earlier in Jurgen Klopp’s reign.
The Peruvian is currently plying his trade at Dynamo Kiev, having joined from Rubin Kazan in 2018.
It could have been very different, however, with Zambrano admitting he turned down the chance to become a Red.
Speaking to Movistar, via the Daily Star, the centre-back says he stayed loyal to Eintracht Frankfurt, who he played for when Liverpool’s interest arrived:
It has always been a dream to play in Liverpool or Sevilla, and I had offers from both.
The Sevilla could not happen because Frankfurt did not want to. I was in a good moment, and I was fine there, and it was not done.
A week before the pre-season, Liverpool had injuries to all their central defenders.
Jurgen Klopp was already in the club and they asked me at that time, but a week before I had promised my coach that I stayed in the club and fight.

Zambrano would likely have been a solid signing for Liverpool, at a time when centre-back options were more sparse than they currently are.
He has 49 caps to his name for Peru since making his international debut back in 2008, highlighting his pedigree as a player.
Liverpool have moved on since those days of trying to sign Zambrano, however, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren making up a formidable centre-back unit.
