Man City beat Liverpool to the signing of youngster Smith

Manchester City have beaten Liverpool to the signing of Kilmarnock youngster Liam Smith, according to the Daily Mail.

The 17-year-old was being monitored by both the Reds and Coty, but it is the latter who have got their man.

Rangers were also linked with signing the teenager, but a switch to England seemingly appealed more to Smith.

The youngster has moved to the Etihad on a four-year deal, joining City’s academy on a scholarship next week.

It is never good to lose out to a rival club with any player, so Liverpool will no doubt be disappointed not to have acquired Smith’s signature.

The Reds still have a plethora of young talent at the club, however, as proven on Sunday, when the likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott shone so bright against Everton.

In our opinion, Smith has taken a risk in moving to City, given that Pep Guardiola himself admitted in an interview last year that he struggles to promote youth players into the first-team on a regular basis due to the pressure he feels to win trophies.
