Liverpool fans are bemused as Murphy says Xhaka would shine for the Reds

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Granit Xhaka would do well in a Reds shirt.

The Swiss was stripped of the captaincy earlier this season, after gesturing towards supporters following his substitution at home to Crystal Palace.

Someone who rates Xhaka is Murphy, with the 42-year-old telling talkSPORT that the 27-year-old could be a success story at Anfield:

If Xhaka was in Liverpool’s side with Henderson and Fabinho, he would look a hell of a player because he is technically good, a good passer, has a great shot on him and he has the ability with his great left foot to open you up.

These Liverpool supporters have been left baffled by Murphy’s remarks, taking to Twitter to say isn’t good enough to play for the European champions.

Xhaka simply isn’t at the level required to play for a Liverpool team now widely seen as the best in the world.

The midfielder has been an inconsistent performer for Arsenal since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, with a mix of good, average and below-par displays thrown in.

He doesn’t possess the physical attributes to shine in the Reds’ midfield, often proving one-paced and rash in the tackle.

Xhaka is a good player – you can’t be an international footballer and not have talent – but he is barely at Arsenal’s level, let alone Liverpool’s.

matchday.
