Pep Guardiola has told his Manchester City players to ‘forget’ about the Premier League title race, all but admitting defeat in it.
The reigning champions eased to a 6-1 win at Aston Villa on Sunday, but they are still 14 points behind Liverpool, having played one game more.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Guardiola appeared to admit that the title was heading to Anfield in May:
Forget about it (top spot). We would have liked to fight against them (Liverpool), but for many reasons we could not.
Tonight, we go to sleep second in the table and one step closer to qualifying for the Champions League next season.

As a pessimistic Liverpool fan, I won’t be getting carried away until it is mathematically impossible for the Reds to miss out on winning the league.
City have shown in the last couple of years that are capable of incredible winning runs – there is no reason why they can’t do the same between now and May.
They have the bit between their teeth at the moment – thankfully, Liverpool’s record-breaking run is keeping them well at bay.
Liverpool will win the title in my opinion, though, and they are in a different class to anyone else this season.
It wouldn’t surprise me if there is an element of mind games with Guardiola’s comments – I think he believes there is still a very slim chance of glory – but everything points towards success for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
If they lose it from here, myself and many Liverpool fans will wonder if it will ever happen for the Reds.
