Pires tips Liverpool to go unbeaten before making Invincible’s comparison

Robert Pires has tipped Liverpool to finish this Premier League season unbeaten, but suggested the achievement will not be as great as Arsenal’s Invincible’s.

Speaking to France Football, Pires suggested no other Premier League team has the ability to beat Liverpool in the league from now until the end of the season.

However the former Gunner also claimed the competition in the Premier League was tougher when Arsenal went the whole of the 2003/04 season unbeaten, when asked whether he thinks the Reds will finish the campaign unbeaten.

Yes, because they have everything going for them: the team, the results, the luck, the coach… I think there are a lot of people who will agree. Considering how they have been playing for some time, I can’t see who would trouble them.

Even Manchester City, when I look at the match against City [a 3-1 win for Liverpool at Anfield in November], there is too big a difference.

Today, technically the Premier League has dipped a little. It’s a bit of an observation people make here. When you see the squads of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham or Arsenal, it’s not as strong as it was a few years ago. The only ones who can trouble them are Manchester City.

They will be champions by going unbeaten, but they can also beat our record. Everything has changed today. People will compare, but I think it was much, much harder in our time.

READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Pires certainly makes an interesting point here in my view.

Given how far ahead Liverpool currently are of City in second and the rest of the chasing pack, his claim is understandable.

Arsenal finished their Invincible season 11 points clear of Chelsea in second, while Manchester United were a further four points adrift.

This season however, Liverpool already have double the lead at the top that the Gunners had at the end of the 2003/04 season.

But while the competition is clearly not as close in terms of points, Liverpool still deserve huge credit for how impressive they have been this season in my opinion.
