Liverpool are preparing a new deal for defender Virgil van Dijk that will make him the highest-paid defender in world football, according to a report by The Mirror’s David Maddock.
As stated in the report, the Reds are planning to offer the new contract to the Dutchman in the summer.
It is understood that Liverpool’s success on and off the pitch has boosted their financial position, therefore allowing them to keep hold of their big-name players through new and improved deals.
According to data on Spotrac, the towering centre-back is currently the club’s second-highest earner, making £180,000 on a weekly basis, the same as striker Roberto Firmino.
However, that is expected to increase significantly in his new deal at the end of the current campaign.
Many Liverpool fans have reacted to the news on Twitter in positive fashion, with some believing that a pay rise is exactly what the centre-back deserves after his displays for the club since making the switch from Southampton in January 2018.
