Kepa could return in goal for Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool

Frank Lampard has hinted that Kepa Arrizabalaga could start in goal for Chelsea against Liverpool on Tuesday night.

The two teams meet in the FA Cup fifth round at Stamford Bridge, with the Reds looking to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time under Jurgen Klopp.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea could be much-changed from the weekend action and Kepa may return to the fold, having fallen out of favour this season.

Speaking to reporters, with quotes provided by Goal, Lampard confirmed that the goalkeeper was in contention to start.

Yes, Kepa [is in contention. He has been professional as expected, trained well and kept his head down, supporting the team and the group.

He has been good, but I say the same every week as I get asked this every week.

Should Lampard hand Kepa the chance to shine, I believe it will act as a boost to Liverpool’s hopes of progressing. The Spaniard has failed to convince during his time in west London, arguably getting worse as the months have passed, lacking the physicality and authority of someone like Alisson.

He has only kept two clean sheets since November, spanning 14 appearances and his return could spread a nervousness among the defence, something that Gary Neville has suggested in thet past and that could play into Liverpool’s hands.

Dejan Lovren being brought in did exactly that to the Reds’ back-line against Watford, and I can see similar things happening with Kepa on Tuesday.
