Fans of Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham have mocked Michael Owen’s comments after Liverpool’s Champions League exit.
The Reds lost 3-2 at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening, despite leading 2-0 early in extra time.
The scoreline did little justice to Liverpool’s dominance, however, and they were unfortunate not to go through to the quarter-finals.
Diego Simeone set out with a gameplan, invariably sitting 10 men behind the ball and ensuring his players defended for their lives.
While some are sure to laud it as a tactical masterclass, Owen was having none of it after the game.
Taking to Twitter on Thursday morning, the former Liverpool striker rubbished the idea that the Atletico boss has outfoxed Jurgen Klopp:
Please spare me all this inevitable Simeone masterclass nonsense. There’s nothing genius about putting 11 top class footballers behind the ball. Liverpool absolutely pumped them throughout.

Unsurprisingly, there was a big response from various sets of fans, such were the nature of Owen’s remarks.
These Man United, City and Spurs supporters were particularly vocal when it came to mocking the 40-year-old.

Defending is just as important as attacking. Regarding attacking, Atletico scored 3 goals compared to Liverpool’s 2. Desperately trying to claw back some credibility from Liverpool fans when in reality they will never forgive you for this pic.twitter.com/budsSfjDLB
