Why Liverpool should consider a move for Ferran Torres

Liverpool should consider making a move to sign Ferran Torres this summer, with Valencia potentially making him available for transfer.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed an impressive season for the La Liga outfit, scoring and assisting six times apiece.

Torres has become a key figure for Valencia, but his future is very much up in the air at the moment, causing concern for his current employers.

Valencia are desperate to tie the young forward down to a new deal, but his head is potentially being turned from interest elsewhere, most notably from Liverpool and Barcelona.

A new report from Marca states that Valencia will have to sell Torres this summer if he doesn’t extend his deal in Spain, because they can’t afford to lose him on a free transfer next year when his current contract expires.

He is a player who could be absolutely ideal for Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp looks to add depth and quality in attacking areas. While Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino represent a trio of world-class stars, there is a huge gulf in class behind them.

Divock Origi has flattered to deceive this season, scoring just three times in the Premier League, while the same applies to Xherdan Shaqiri, who has managed only two league starts.

The pair have both linked with Anfield exits this summer, too, only heightening the possible need for reinforcements. While still very young, and therefore potentially raw as a player, Torres arguably looks more suited to being a success at Liverpool, given his style of play.

Silky smooth, possessing quick feet and also an aerial threat – he won an average of 2.3 aerial duels per match in the Champions League this season – he is at his best on the left-hand side, where he could be an ideal deputy to Mane.

Recent reports have claimed that Torres’ versatility also appeals to Liverpool, with the Spaniard capable of switching flanks or adopting a more central role, too.

A sizeable fee may be required to prise the European U17 and U19 Championship winner away from Valencia – a €100 million release clause is mooted – but his vast potential suggests he could end up being worth every penny.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson’s price tags were questioned at the time, but they have gone on to prove that they were bargains, relatively speaking.
