Dejan Lovren leaves to join Zenit St Petersburg

Liverpool have confirmed that Dejan Lovren has left the club to join Zenit St Petersburg.

The 31-year-old saw himself fall down the pecking order at Liverpool during their successful 2019/2020 season and he made just 15 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal; a header in a 1-1 draw against Napoli in a Champions League group clash at Anfield.

Lovren first joined Liverpool from Southampton for £20m back in 2014, and after making 185 appearances for the club, the time feels right for him to depart Anfield.

Like Adam Lallana, who joined the Reds in the same summer, game time has been at a premium and at his age, Lovren understandably wants to be playing regular first-team football.

As fourth-choice centre-backs go, Lovren was a decent option, despite some of his well-publicised errors, so it may not be easy for the Reds to replace the Croatian international.

Liverpool do have a few young defenders on their books but it remains to be seen if one of them steps up to the first-team fold to replace Lovren or if the club decide to dip into the transfer market.
