Liverpool have been handed an injury worry just days before the Community Shield clash with Arsenal as Virgil van Dijk was forced out of Tuesday’s friendly game against Red Bull Salzburg.
Van Dijk took a nasty blow above his right eye when challenging to get his head to the ball at a corner kick and it created a nasty cut above his eye.
The injury looked like it would need to be stitched, which is far from ideal just a few days before The Reds play Arsenal at Wembley in the season’s curtain raiser.
Liverpool will hope that the cut isn’t too deep or nasty and that Van Dijk will be able to play in the game, but whether The Reds decide not to pick him and to let the wound heal more remains to be seen.
Nat Phillips came on to replace Van Dijk in the game and he’d be likely to start on Saturday if the Dutchman is ruled out.
