Liverpool interested in Swiss international midfielder Denis Zakaria

Liverpool are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to Empire of the Kop

Any move is likely to wait until next summer, however, when the 23-year-old is likely to be allowed to leave the Bundesliga club.

Deployed most often as a holding midfielder, the Reds have tracked the progress of the Gladbach star and could make a move next summer.

A fee of around £45million has been touted as enough to sign the Swiss star, although, with a current deal that runs out in 2022, Liverpool’s chief negotiators will be keen to chip away at that figure.

The Premier League champions’ current occupant of Zakaria’s most prevalent position at the base of midfield is Brazilian star Fabinho, and whilst a replacement is not being sought, a high-quality backup could be useful.

Zakaria has made 96 appearances for the five times German domestic title winners, scoring eight times.

A teammate of Xherdan Shaqiri at the international level, the defensive midfielder has been a mainstay in the national side since his debut in 2016, making 28 appearances.

Whilst not one for the immediate, Liverpool have a recent history of getting their business done well in advance, meaning this one could well materialise.
