Shaqiri available for Everton clash after testing negative for COVID-19

Xherdan Shaqiri has tested negative for COVID-19 having originally tested positive, as reported by the Swiss Football Association.

The 28-year-old was expected to have to self-isolate for two weeks, but it has been confirmed that his positive test “can be attributed to a previous infection and that he is therefore not infectious.”

It means Shaqiri is available for Liverpool’s vital Merseyside derby clash away to Everton a week on Saturday.

Shaqiri represents a strong option for Liverpool as long as he can stay fit, which has admittedly been an issue in the past.

The winger has proven ability at the top of the level, playing for both the Reds and Bayern Munich, and the unpredictability to his attacking game makes him a dangerous substitute.

Such is the depth within Jurgen Klopp’s squad, however, it will be tough for Shaqiri to even make the bench at Goodison Park.

Assuming Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all start the game, Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino will already be waiting in the wings in the second half, as well as potentially Divock Origi.

Having someone of Shaqiri’s ability sweating over even a squad place is a healthy position to be in, though, highlighting what a formidable group of players Klopp has assembled.
