Joel Matip and Thiago were both absent from training on Tuesday, suggesting they are out of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Ajax.

The Reds open their European account with a trip to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday night, in what could be one of their most testing games of the group stage.

There was no sign of either Matip or Thiago in Tuesday’s pre-Ajax training session, with the Independent‘s Melissa Reddy confirming the news on Twitter, saying they are not expected to travel for the game.

It has already been revealed that Matip went for a scan after the Everton game at the weekend, while Thiago was on the wrong end of a dreadful tackle from Richarlison.

This is a further blow to Jurgen Klopp, who is already without Virgil van Dijk, not to mention Alisson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, too.

Matip has become a horribly injury-prone figure for Liverpool and they desperately need him to stay fit now. It is no good him being in and out of the side, especially without Van Dijk.

Thiago was exceptional against Everton, so his playmaking ability will be missed greatly, should his absence be confirmed.

Gini Wijnaldum or Naby Keita will likely come in for him – both could actually start, should Fabinho play at centre-back alongside Joe Gomez.
