Liverpool were interested in signing Thuram during the summer

Marcus Thuram was a transfer target for Liverpool in the summer, according to Movistar commentator Alain Valnegri, via Sport Witness.

During the last transfer window, there was a need for Liverpool to add more attacking depth behind Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, with the Reds too reliant on the trio.

The Premier League champions were reportedly eyeing up a move for Borussia Monchengladbach star Thuram, but a deal never came to fruition.

Liverpool ended up signing Dioga Jota instead, with the Portuguese already making an impression at Anfield, scoring in the league wins at home to Arsenal and Sheffield United.

Speaking to El Pais, Valnegri confirmed the Reds’ interest in Thuram:

For me, Marcus is destined for a top club. He already sounded for Liverpool this summer.

While Thuram is an excellent young talent, scoring 10 goals and registering eight assists in the Bundesliga last season, Jota already looks like the ideal piece of business.

Both players are the same age, so longevity isn’t on Thuram’s side, while Jota’s knowledge of English football means he has slotted in seamlessly at Liverpool.

Two goals in 195 minutes of league action bodes well, with the former Wolves man bringing quality and end product that was lacking behind the first-choice front-three.

At 23, Thuram is a great prospect who has the ability to move to a bigger club, but the Reds shouldn’t feel like they missed a trick not signing him, considering they snapped up Jota as an alternative.
