Liverpool have five centre-backs that they are eyeing up as potential centre-back additions, according to 90min.

The Reds are currently short of options in defence, following a string of injury problems.

Not only is Virgil van Dijk likely to be out for the rest of the season, but Fabinho and Joel Matip are missing, too, leaving a lot of pressure on Joe Gomez to perform.

This latest report claims that the five possible players Liverpool could sign are Schalke and Villarreal duo Ozan Kabak and Pau Torres, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykola Matvienko, Sevilla youngster Jules Kounde and highly-rated RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.

I think it would be negligent for the Reds not to bring in a new face in January, considering how threadbare they look at the back right now.

Rhys Williams is still vastly inexperienced, so it would be unfair to rely on him too much, while using Jordan Henderson as a centre-back is a short-term solution, at best.

Upamecano is the most high-profile option out of the five, but he will cost a large sum of money, so Liverpool must be sure that they rate him highly enough. His performance against Manchester United in midweek was not impressive.

Kabak may actually be the best option, considering he would cost less and suits Liverpool’s style, averaging a 91.1 percent pass completion rate in the Bundesliga this season.
