Andy Robertson has spoken of his admiration for Brazil legend Roberto Carlos, admitting he was an inspiration to him growing up.
Robertson has been a magnificent signing for Liverpool, having joined from Hull City in the summer of 2017.
Although his arrival was relatively low-key at the time, he has matured into arguably the world’s best left-back, combining attacking brilliance with defensive nous.
Speaking to Esporte Interativo [via Sport Witness], Robertson revealed his love for Carlos as a player:
When I was young, everyone spoke about Roberto Carlos, about his free-kicks, about the way he drove forward. He was a very attacking fullback at a time when fullbacks weren’t as attacking as they maybe are now.
He was one of the big influences on all of us, he kind of changed the fullback role along with a few others. He was one of the ones who drove it forward.”
He’s a legend in my eyes. I think I’d pay a lot of money to have his left foot for a free-kick. But I’m not sure I can get that skill. An amazing player, an amazing career, I looked up to him and I still do.

Carlos is undoubtedly one of the all-time great left-backs, so Robertson had a perfect role model to admire growing up.
The Scot is forging a superb career for himself, however, proving to be a key man for Liverpool during a glorious period under Jurgen Klopp.
He has been the Reds’ best defender so far this season, also remaining fit while the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho have been injured.
At 26, Robertson is a player right at the peak of his powers, and his influence could continue to be huge for years to come.
