Divock Origi named as potential January target for Borussia Dortmund

Liverpool striker Divock Origi has been named as a possible January saviour for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

Writing for German publication T-Online, former Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg has backed Dortmund to make a move for the 25-year-old, who has fallen massively out of favour at Anfield.

Origi’s future on Merseyside has come in for plenty of debate recently as he sees his game-time plummet following the signing of Diogo Jota in the summer. The Belgian may seek more first team football as the rescheduled Euro 2020 approaches in the summer.

Effenberg suggested that Origi could act as cover for Erling Haaland, who is currently ruled out with a hamstring injury. He wrote: ”Two other candidates for a winter transfer or at least a loan deal until the end of the season: Divock Origi from Liverpool or Mauro Icardi from PSG. They haven’t played there this season, just sat on the bench.”

The 52-year-old also proclaimed that both Origi and Icadi have ‘proven their skills’ and could be of immediate use to the Bundesliga side, who recently sacked Lucien Farve.

Far be it for anyone of a Liverpool persuasion to offer to drive Origi to John Lennon Airport themselves. After all, the enigmatic striker has given Kopites some of the most joyous moments in the Jurgen Klopp era to date.

There is no denying the former Lille man’s form has dramatically declined since the glorious end to the 2018/19 season but, in truth, even being linked with Dortmund as well as being named in the same breath as the prolific Icardi is a huge compliment.

There is little value in a loan deal for the Reds, as that would simply leave them without the fee to spend and one option light. Should Klopp’s former employers approach with a decent monetary bid, however, the time may have come to say goodbye and thanks for the memories.
