Carragher claims Mane was Liverpool’s best player in Southampton defeat

Sadio Mane was Liverpool’s best player against Southampton “by a long way”, according to Reds legend Jamie Carragher.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were awful on Monday evening, as Danny Ings’ early goal downed his former team and earned Saints a 1-0 win at St Mary’s.

There were below par performances from Liverpool players everywhere you looked, but Mane was one of the few bright sparks.

The 28-year-old never stopped trying to make things happen, battling hard up against the excellent Kyle Walker-Peters.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game [via HITC], Carragher hailed Mane as the Reds’ standout figure:

I thought he was Liverpool’s best player by a long way.

Carragher is spot on in his assessment, with Mane not at his best, but still the most forceful player on the pitch for Liverpool.

He kept battling throughout, especially in the second half, and was unlucky not to win a penalty after being fouled by Walker-Peters.

Mane is a born winner who popped at big times endlessly last season, with goals away to the likes of Aston Villa and Norwich City helping Liverpool win the Premier League title.

Klopp is going to need his No.10 at his absolute best in the coming weeks, as the Reds look to respond from this current blip.
