Plenty of Liverpool fans have been reacting to the revelation from reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano that the Reds were offered the chance to sign Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos this month.
Romano confirmed on his Here We Go podcast [via Rousing The Kop] that the Greek defender was made available to the reigning Premier League champions as a solution to the defensive injury crisis within Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
The 32-year-old played 19 times last season in the league for the Gunners, earning an average rating of 6.94 from Sofascore.
Whilst the notion was seemingly rejected, for the time being as Romano suggested there is scope for the Reds to return. Klopp has previous with the experienced Greece international, having worked together successfully at Borussia Dortmund.
Having not played a single top-flight match this season and with more than a few previous errors to his name, its safe to say some Kopites aren’t convinced that Sokratis is the man to resolve the current defensive ailments. Indeed, one quipped that he would be ‘another Lovren’, a reference to the error-prone Croatian who left Anfield last summer after six years at the club.
