Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer has taken a swipe at Manchester United, claiming they are in a “false position” in the Premier League.
The Reds host their biggest rivals in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday afternoon, with the champions trailing by three points currently.
It is arguably the most important game of the season so far, as Jurgen Klopp’s men look to bounce back from some disappointing recent league results.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game, McAteer claimed United’s place at the top isn’t justified and that they will eventually fall away in the title race:
#MUFC are in a "false position" at the top of the table and will drop out of the title race as the season progresses, according to former Premier League midfielder Jason McAteer.

These comments are sure to rile United supporters, but McAteer does have a point with his remarks.
While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side deserve credit for a good run of form, they have been grinding out wins more than anything, rather that looking like potential champions.
They were comprehensively outplayed by Manchester City in their recent Carabao Cup semi-final defeat, highlighting the gulf in class that still exists between the pair.
Hopefully, the same happens on Sunday, as Liverpool aim to outline their superiority, too.
