Jamie Carragher calls for ‘something big’ this summer at Liverpool

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has called for ‘something big’ in the summer transfer window in order to instil the Reds as title challengers once again next season.

Speaking after Jurgen Klopp‘s side suffered a never before seen fifth straight home defeat, Carragher admitted that his former club need another Philippe Coutinho style player. He told Sky Sports:

That’s the real worry for me going forward – where the goals are going to come from next season. Diogo Jota will help that – he looked sharp when he came on. But Liverpool need to do something big in the transfer market in terms of bringing someone in to score goals.

Pinpointing the defensive injury crisis at Anfield along with players forced out of position as possible reasons for the decline, the Red of 737 outings harked back to a Klopp mantra:

Klopp famously said that his pressing is better than any No.10, but when you look at Liverpool right now, they look like they need a No.10. They need that type of player as the pressing is not quite there.

Going on to name drop Countinho, now of Barcelona, Carragher also stated Liverpool currently don’t have anyone who can make the incisive final pass.

When Coutinho left under a cloud, many thought it could be the end of Liverpool’s success, when in fact it was just the beginning.

However, Liverpool’s recent decline has been stark and quite frankly alarming, therefore calls for an alteration in style are far from unfounded.

This current squad has given so much in recent seasons and right now cuts wholly dejected figures. A change of emphasis with the introduction of fresh faces in the summer could reignite the whole football club.

There may already be a ready-made playmaker in the squad, with Curtis Jones more than capable of adapting and perhaps a new role beckons for Roberto Firmino.

One thing is for certain, this side have suffered and come through its fair share of adversity and is well equipped to do so again.
