On this day (April 1) in 2012, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was dismissed at St James’ Park as the Reds fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

Unfortunately, it was no April Fool’s Day joke for Jose Enrique, as the left-back donned the gloves against his former club after Reina was sent off with 10 minutes remaining for squaring up to James Perch.

Goals either side of half time from Magpies striker Papiss Cisse won the day as the Toon headed into sixth place, whilst the Reds were left floundering in eighth under the stewardship of club legend Kenny Dalglish.

Bizarrely Enrique kept a clean sheet during his time in goal on what was a miserable day all-round for Liverpool, with Andy Carroll receiving a yellow card for diving when through on goal early on.

The Reds finished the campaign in eighth and underwent a change in manager at the end of the season as Dalglish stepped back to make way for Brendan Rodgers.

These days the fortunes of both clubs have rather gone in alternative directions as Liverpool continue to bask in the glory of recent campaigns whilst Newcastle look to fend off relegation this term.
